FITS Heroes

Here at FITS we are so inspired by the CNN Heroes- http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/cnn.heroes/index.html - award program that celebrates and honors "everyday people who are changing the world", that we decided to institute our own FITS HEROES program! In late November of 2011 we asked our Facebook friends, "What rider do you know who is changing the world?" We asked them to post a photo and the story of their nominee on our facebook page. The winning nominee won a $500 FITS wardrobe with our gratitude. We hope this is just the beginning of honoring many riding heroes.

Nancy Davidson, Master in Theological Studies, The Virginia Theological Nancy DavidsonSeminary, has been a certified riding instructor since 2001 and previously taught riding to children with life-threatening illnesses. She currently instructs beginning and emerging riders at MEA Haven Farm. As part of her degree she did an independent study on the relationship between animals and humans, focusing specifically on horses. Nancy remains an avid rider and competitor.

"Dropping the Reins (DtR) is a not-for-profit organization developed in 2009 to give the unique experience of being around horses to those who would not ordinarily have the opportunity. It is also for those who are seeking renewal, self-discovery, and empowerment in their lives. DtR seeks to help caregivers and their families by providing them with time to refresh and reflect on their care-giving experiences. For adults, the equine experience can lead to personal examination that enhances and alters life directions. For children, the experience of grooming and riding horses and ponies can free them from personal trauma in their lives.

DtR serves those who are going through transitions in their lives and want to experience the power and gentleness of horses as a way to move from anxiety, grief, loss, or feelings of being stuck, to new directions, that help pave the way to personal renewal and satisfaction. Horses have the uncanny ability to unleash an individual's quiet inner strength that provides the fuel to move forward and out of feeling trapped in personal circumstances. Equine experiences should not replace prescriptive therapies from medical and behavioral professionals. However, spending time around horses is a powerful experience that can provide relief from personal challenges."
